The Parents Project is a first-of-its-kind digital presence, inclusive of videos, advice, and resources, dedicated exclusively toward helping parents understand their LGBTQ kids.
Happy Pride Month! This month I am celebrating one year of partnership with The Parents Project. Founded by Dannielle Owens-Reid and Kristin Russo, The Parents Project is a first-of-its-kind digital presence, inclusive of videos, advice, and resources, dedicated exclusively toward helping parents understand their LGBTQ kids. With the help of many contributors, the team responds to questions ranging from Is there a biological age for coming out? to How do I talk to my trans teen about sex? to What is Pansexuality?
I am honored and proud to be a part of this project, which saves lives and makes life better for families and youth every day.
My first year of contributions to The Parents Project include:
Should I Ask? – “I think my son might be gay. He never mentions any interest in girls… but he’s never actually come out to me as gay or anything like that. Should I ask him directly? Will this make it easier for him to tell me?” Also in Spanish: Le debería preguntar?
On Bullying: ‘How Can I Help? – “My 13-year-old son told me that he was being bullied in school and that the other kids were calling him ‘gay.’ How can I help him without embarrassing him?”
Six Cultural Barriers to Family Acceptance – “I’ve learned that it wasn’t my son that was causing me shame; it was the biases and expectations of the culture I grew up in.”
Navigating Multiple Marginalized Identities -“My middle school son is Latino, adopted, and identifies as gay. He is already being bullied at school for being different (we live in a primarily white community) and as a straight, white dad I am not in a position to understand what he is going through. What should I do to help my son get through this?”
Many thanks to Kristin, Dannielle, Sarah (former intern) and Grace (current intern) for your vision, creativity, dedication, and partnership!
