Laurin Mayeno, the proud mixed-race mother of a multiracial gay son, launched Out Proud Families to pursue her passion—using her voice as a mother to build acceptance and support within families and communities. She draws from her own process of learning and growth to build bridges of understanding across difference. Her Proud Mom videos and blogs are featured on this website. Her children’s book One of a Kind Like Me/Único como yo is great conversation starter about gender diversity in children. Laurin’s son, Danny Moreno, is fully supportive of her work and has collaborated on many projects. He has agreed to share his story and photos because he believes it will make a difference in the lives of other young people.

Laurin’s work with Out Proud Families builds off of 27 years as a mother, nine years of volunteer experience organizing and conducting education and dialogue with families about acceptance and support for LGBTQ youth, and 17 years of experience working as a trainer and facilitator on topics of cultural diversity, equity and multicultural communication with Mayeno Consulting.
